Thoughts on iMovie

I have lately been warming up to the rebooted version of iMovie.
When Apple discontinued iMovie HD for a new app called iMovie in 2007 I, as a user, was a bit shell shocked. To so completely revamp an application and introducing so many new UI metaphors requires the user to do a lot of relearning. My snappy judgement of the app: It had too much suckage going on.
Apple have done some improvements and it seems to be more capable and usable than in it’s initial configuration. Hence my warming up.
Some observations Link to heading
Digital media is fragile. Importing iMovie 6 HD projects to iMovie 11 is brittle and files are left behind. Apple, I expect more.
iMovie is a basic video editing application. It does not do a lot of things and there are much more capable tools available. For my usual video editing needs, it’s enough. I like things that are just right. Akin to why I prefer text editors to word processors when editing text.
The iMovie user interface borrows from the iOS platform. I would not be surprised if a future iPad also happens to be a MacBook.
