USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (Polar Lights 1/1000)

I started this build in 2023, and it has been a journey. After the initial assembly, I was a little overwhelmed by getting the base-coat mix right. During 2024, I was focused on the Discovery Enterprise, so this one had to wait.

In 2025, I finally laid down the base coat and decided not to use the kit decals. Instead, I masked and painted most of the details. I deliberately left out the grid lines and some of the weathering, but the result feels like my own interpretation of the ship.

Researching the original model through material on various sites, the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, the Smithsonian site, and YouTube gives a deeper sense of the care that went into these models and their history. Working through the details—masking and painting in my own style—made that care tangible. Eventually, I stepped back and felt that a little of that history was now in front of me.

A CG model by Petri Blomqvist was particularly useful during the build. Higher-resolution versions and Gary Kerr’s guide are available at A Modeler’s Guide to Painting the Starship Enterprise.
